Creative Money aims to have an open conversation about finances in the creative industries.
It was founded in July, 2020 in an attempt to address a frustrating lack of relatable financial guidance for creative workers and is written by me, Matt Parker, a music journalist and lecturer.
Hello! How have you been?
As you may have noticed there have some been some change to the frequency of Creative Money newsletters (OK, I’ve not written one for six months). This is intentional.
Between writing and running Creative Money workshops, I have been mega-work-busy. As such, I’ve decided to drop the regular funding round-up and just update you when there’s new content on the site or other useful resources that can help with the wobbly finances of creative life.
There are many fine organisations, already doing a great job in promoting funding opportunities. I really recommend the good folks at I Like Networking, The Uncultured and Art Rabbit, for a start.
Also, scouring pages for funding opps across the entirety of the art, fashion, publishing, theatre and media industries was UNFUN* – and that is very much not the point of Creative Money.

Three other bits of Creative Money news for you:
👉 New Creative Money homepage! 👈 This has been overhauled to make it cleaner and easier to find information on Creative Money workshops, or navigate to the Creative Money blog.
On the course front, I will be hosting the next batch of online 💰👩💻 Run Your Money workshops 💰👩💻 for students at BIMM colleges in Brighton, Bristol, London and Manchester (available via BIMM Extra), plus Screen Film School Manchester (ask Student Services).
These will happen on Mon, Wed and Thurs at 6pm from now until 31 March, 2022. If you’re enrolled at one of these fine institutions, come along!Relatedly: the most recent Creative Money piece details my 🧾 student budget spreadsheet 🧾 and guide to making your loan last (spoiler: budgets get broken, don’t sweat it).
If you are not a student, fear not! There remains more to come on the site, so stay tuned to the blog. I’m also looking for things to do with Creative Money over the summer, so if you or your organisation are interested in collaborating, get in touch!
Finally, a reminder: it’s nearly the end of the tax year. March could be a good time to spend money on on work-related expenses (for instance, new equipment etc.)
Until next time,
Matt

The Uncultured has put together an updated template for applying for Arts Council funding under £30K (The Uncultured)
This is a refreshingly clear, non-hyperbolic NFT explainer, which is particularly worth reading if you’re an artist who’s been approached about getting into bed with a crypto platform. TL;DR: who is covering the costs? If it's you, then it's a vanity gallery... (OneZero/Medium)
The Guardian has been running a Money Hacks series for the last five months – it’s pretty useful (e.g. How to turn your hobby into an income stream) but often buried on the site. (The Guardian)

This is the opening piece in an ambitious collaboration between electronic musician/composer Hannah Peel and Bristol’s Paraorchestra. It essentially considers the entirety of human existence and mankind’s search for meaning as a mere blink of an eye, on a planetary scale… Ideal, for a mid-week existential crisis!
